Old School Meets New School with DJ Trashy and K5 at Club Rush

by Anne Wood

This Saturday, March 29, 2014, old school beats will mix with a new school sound with famed EDM group K5 and DJ Trashy at their CD Release Party. The two teamed up to create the album which is DJ Trashy’s 13th released CD.
K5’s music dominated the club scene and radio in the 90s with their biggest hits, “Passion” and “Red Alert.” K5 enjoyed the success of “Passion” when it sold more than 1,000,000 copies worldwide and 500,000 in the US – earning K5 a gold record. DJ Trashy is no stranger to success either, having worked with eight record labels and releasing twelve full-length albums.

The release party, presented by Jeff Fisher, will not only feature both K5 and DJ Trashy but Danny C as well who has been spinning EDM and electro since 1983 but only recently decided to jump back into the scene after having taken a break from the world of music to focus on his art career. Danny C is back, and Jeff Fisher isn’t surprised.

“Break beat electro style is coming back,” Fisher says.

KJ Shiver, aka “DJ KJ” founding member of K5, agrees and adds that he was most heavily influenced by the music he grew up on in the 80s.

“I was watching MTV back when it was still MTV – Music Television,” KJ said. “MTV sucks now.”

Whether or not you agree with that, it is apparent MTV has become something different than it was in the 80s and 90s and KJ contends that the answer is not necessarily to stay totally in the 80s, just like you can’t only focus on the present. His vision with this album was to marry the two together – blend old school sounds, the sounds he grew up on, with a new school feel and the latest technology.

“You do have to keep up with the times,” KJ admits. That doesn’t mean abandoning the old school stuff; rather, it means taking it and reconfiguring it into a more accessible and relatable package for people of all ages and all walks of life. This show and CD Release Party will attract all kinds of fans from those who love 80s rock n’ roll to 90s grunge fans all the way to fans of contemporary, electronic house music – and that is exactly the goal.

One of the biggest differences in K5 from the 90s and K5 now, according to KJ, is the addition of his own vocals. KJ has collaborated with multiple vocalists, most notably Tammy Wright who was featured on “Passion,” but it was not until this album that KJ contributed his own voice.

Of course, evolving your sound comes with risks…but, for those of you who remember loving the K5 sound from back in the day, don’t fret! KJ noted that while the sound has changed and evolved with the times, there is still a little something for everyone on the album and at the show.

So, whether you consider yourself “old school,” “new school,” or anywhere in between – you won’t want to miss this fun and energetic show featuring DJ Trashy, DJ KJ / K5, and Danny C! Tickets are available for $10 in advance or $15 at the door.
